A Dream Journey to New Zealand

A journey to New Zealand had been a cherished dream of mine for many years. When I was finally able to arrange the necessary funds, I booked the tour through Veena World. Although some difficulties arose after our travel coordinator was transferred, the Mumbai office resolved them promptly, and our long-awaited journey began.

On 9 May, we travelled to Kolkata, flew to Mumbai the following day, and then continued via Kuala Lumpur to Auckland. The long journey was tiring, but the moment we stepped out of Auckland Airport, the country's pristine environment, lush greenery and peaceful atmosphere made every hardship worthwhile. Our tour group consisted of thirty-nine travellers from different parts of India, and before long we had become a close-knit travelling family.

Our first excursion was to Rotorua, renowned for its geothermal activity and Māori heritage. At Te Puia we watched the spectacular Pohutu Geyser erupt and visited the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, where we learnt about Māori culture and traditions. At Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, the colourful geothermal pools, especially the famous Champagne Pool, presented an extraordinary natural spectacle. Later we visited Hobbiton, the enchanting film set of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, before ending the day with a relaxing bath in the mineral-rich waters of the Polynesian Spa overlooking Lake Rotorua.

The following morning, we travelled to the famous Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Our guide, a descendant of the Māori chief who first explored the caves, explained their history before we boarded a small boat. As thousands of glowworms illuminated the cave ceiling like a star-filled night sky, silence and wonder combined to create one of the most magical experiences of our journey.

On 14 May, we flew to Christchurch, the largest city in New Zealand's South Island. The city impressed us with its resilience following the devastating 2011 earthquake. The Transitional or Cardboard Cathedral, constructed largely from cardboard tubes, stood as a remarkable symbol of hope and recovery. We also passed the picturesque Hagley Oval and admired Christchurch's beautifully maintained parks and heritage tram.

One of the highlights of the tour was the famous TranzAlpine train journey to Arthur's Pass. As the train crossed plains, rivers and the majestic Southern Alps, we became so engrossed in the scenery that we accidentally missed our designated stop. The railway staff, particularly the lady driver, treated us with exceptional kindness, while our tour manager and fellow travellers patiently waited for us at the final station. What could have become a stressful incident instead became one of our fondest memories because of the warmth and professionalism shown by everyone involved.

The next morning we were scheduled to fly by helicopter to Fox Glacier. Unfortunately, poor weather forced the cancellation of the much-anticipated flight. Although disappointed, we visited Wanaka's famous Puzzling World instead. Its illusion rooms, leaning tower and giant maze provided an enjoyable and unexpected alternative, reminding us that travel often rewards flexibility.

Our journey then took us through Fiordland National Park to Milford Sound. Along the way we stopped at Eglinton Valley and Mirror Lakes, though mist prevented us from seeing the famous reflections. During our cruise aboard the Gem of the Sound, towering cliffs, magnificent waterfalls and dramatic fjords surrounded us. The vessel even approached waterfalls closely enough for us to feel their icy spray while we enjoyed a delicious buffet lunch amid one of the world's finest natural landscapes.

Queenstown, New Zealand's adventure capital, offered another unforgettable chapter. Bad weather initially delayed our Shotover Jet ride, so our tour manager took us to the historic Kawarau Bridge, birthplace of commercial bungy jumping. Watching participants leap into the gorge below was thrilling, while others in our group enjoyed the giant swing and zipline. Later, the weather improved and we finally experienced the famous Shotover Jet ride through narrow canyons. Despite the freezing temperature, the exhilarating speed and spectacular scenery made it unforgettable. A helicopter flight over Queenstown's mountains, lakes and valleys later that day provided a peaceful contrast to the earlier adventures.

As we travelled back towards Christchurch, we hoped to enjoy clear views of Mount Cook. Once again, nature had different plans, and thick clouds concealed New Zealand's highest peak. Fortunately, the breathtaking turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo more than compensated for our disappointment, offering one of the most serene landscapes of the entire tour.

Our final day in Christchurch began at the International Antarctic Centre. The Hägglunds vehicle ride, Antarctic Storm Room and informative exhibits gave us a fascinating insight into the harsh conditions faced by Antarctic researchers. We then visited Willowbank Wildlife Reserve, where we saw New Zealand's unique native wildlife, including the kiwi, tuatara and the rare takahē, whose remarkable conservation story reflects the country's commitment to protecting its natural heritage.

Returning to Auckland, some members of our group went skydiving while others enjoyed shopping. We visited the interactive All Blacks Experience, the iconic Sky Tower and Auckland Harbour Bridge before spending a peaceful evening by the seashore. After dinner, it was time to bid farewell to this remarkable country and begin our journey home.

Looking back, New Zealand impressed me not only with its breathtaking scenery but also with the character of its people. Throughout the tour, changing weather repeatedly altered our plans. The cancellation of the Fox Glacier helicopter ride, the mist at Mirror Lakes and the hidden Mount Cook were initially disappointing, yet each setback led to unexpected experiences that enriched our journey. The kindness of the railway staff during our train mishap, the efficiency of our tour manager and the friendliness of strangers demonstrated a culture of courtesy and compassion that left a lasting impression.

The country itself reflects a deep respect for nature and public life. Clean surroundings, disciplined traffic, punctuality, environmental consciousness and a strong work culture are evident everywhere. Drivers rarely use horns, pedestrians are given priority, and people greet strangers warmly. Even with minimal staffing, hotels and public services function efficiently. During our visit, we also met an Indian professional happily settled in Auckland, whose experiences reflected the opportunities and quality of life the country offers.

As our aircraft finally lifted off for India, I realised that the memories I would treasure most were not merely of magnificent mountains, sparkling lakes and dramatic fjords, but of a nation where natural beauty is matched by human warmth, discipline and hospitality. New Zealand had fulfilled a long-cherished dream and left us with memories that will remain with us for a lifetime.
