India Overtakes China in Population: World Bank Data Highlights Changing Global Demographics

New Delhi, August 31 – According to World Bank population estimates, India has been steadily closing the gap with China over the past decade and by 2022, India’s population reached 1.40 billion (140.7 crore), almost equaling China’s 1.41 billion (141.2 crore). This demographic shift holds enormous social, economic, and strategic implications for the world.

Between 2015 and 2022, India’s population rose from 1.31 billion to 1.40 billion, marking a growth of nearly 10 crore people in seven years. In contrast, China’s population growth has plateaued, rising only marginally from 1.37 billion in 2015 to 1.41 billion in 2022. The data suggests that China has entered a demographic slowdown, while India continues to see a robust increase, especially in its younger age groups.

Demographers suggest that India’s rising population could become a double-edged sword. On one hand, it provides a “demographic dividend,” as more young people enter the workforce, fueling economic growth. On the other hand, challenges like unemployment, healthcare, and infrastructure stress could worsen if adequate policies are not implemented.

The United Nations has already projected that India will officially surpass China in total population by 2023, making it the most populous country in the world. Experts believe this change will influence global markets, supply chains, and even international geopolitics, as India’s consumer base expands and its workforce becomes central to global industries.

The Indian government has been focusing on skill development, digital literacy, and expanding industrial capacity to harness this demographic advantage. Meanwhile, China is grappling with an aging population and declining birth rates, raising concerns about long-term economic productivity.

In the coming decades, the world will witness how these demographic changes reshape power balances in Asia and beyond.
