THWARTED ATTACK
John Grey
Coiled
up in a corner,
shrinking
from woman
down to child,
she sang a nursery rhyme
in a small voice,
and the would-be rapist
turned away from her
and ran,
first at a man’s pace,
then a boy’s
and, by the time
he made it back
to his apartment,
he was crawling
and bawling like a baby.
